Next Steps for Starlab Operators
We are in a unique position to comment on the benefits for Starlab operators to adopt the Cosmodome projection system, as we have run a Starlab Outreach programme for 14 years.
Mobile Dome Projection
In developing Cosmodome, we found that no matter how we upgraded the equipment, Starlab domes were too wrinkled for good movie projection quality. The problem was solved with Go-Domes. These work well for standard Starlab projections, so if your dome needs replacement take the first step towards Cosmodome with a Go-Dome.Advantages of Cosmodome over Starlab
- Cosmodome enables mobile operations to compete with spectacular fixed planetaria shows.
- The increasing library of movies, covering various disciplines and from many different sources, gives value to repeated visits to the same venue.
- Computers and projectors can be purchased locally, simplifying service and warranty.
- Cosmodome is more popular during school vacations, thus improving cash flow when schools are on vacation.
- Cosmodome has a real entertainment quality beyond plain education.
- The equipment lies at the edge of the dome, not in central and valuable audience space. No power leads cross the public area, adding to safety factors.
- The software can 'warp' any material intended for fisheye projection.
- Operators can be comfortably seated throughout the presentation.
- The Stellarium programme replaces the Starlab Starfield, Greek Myths, and the Celestial Coordinates cylinders, and also any photo slides and videos.
- The full dome Earth projection and the flat screen capability replaces the Starlab Earth Cylinder and VHS special effects presentations.
- Operators can choose whatever projection resolution suits their purpose.
Extra Equipment We Needed for Starlab
To achieve the outcomes required in the school curriculum, we use three cylinders - Earth (for night and day and time zones), the Starfield and the Greek Myths (for juniors). We found these needed supplementing, and had to add items to make a concise presentation in the 45 minutes allotted each class:- A video player and Sharp LCD video projector, with movies to show special effects, such as cause of the seasons, Polar effects, the Tides, the stellar calendar, etc.
- A carousel slide projector to show life cycles of stars and close ups of the planets, etc.
- A red light on a dimmer switch to represent sunset and sunrise
- A globe to demonstrate the spinning and orbiting earth
- A ball to show phases of the moon around the unmasked projector light
